Dosage Calculations. In Exercises 21–26, use the data in the accompanying table, which lists the numbers of correct and wrong dosage amounts calculated by physicians. In a research experiment, one group of physicians was given bottles of epinephrine labeled with a concentration of “1 milligram in 1 milliliter solution,” and another group of physicians was given bottles labeled with a ratio of “1 milliliter of a 1:1000 rotation.” The two labels describe the exact same amount, and the physicians were instructed to administer 0.12 milligrams of epinephrine. The results were reported in The New York Times.
Correct Dosage Calculation | Wrong Dosage Calculation | |
Concentration Label (“1 milligram in 1 milliliter solution”) |
11 | 3 |
Ratio Label (“1 milliliter of a 1:1000 solution”) |
2 | 12 |
26. Which Group Did Worse?
- a. For the physicians given the bottles labeled with a concentration, find the percentage of wrong dosage calculations, then express it as a
probability . - b. For the physicians given the bottles labeled with a ratio, find the percentage of wrong dosage calculations; then express it as a probability.
- c. Does it appear that either group did worse? What does the result suggest about drug labels?

- Solve task from imagearrow_forwardHeart rate during laughter. Laughter is often called “the best medicine,” since studies have shown that laughter can reduce muscle tension and increase oxygenation of the blood. In the International Journal of Obesity (Jan. 2007), researchers at Vanderbilt University investigated the physiological changes that accompany laughter. Ninety subjects (18–34 years old) watched film clips designed to evoke laughter. During the laughing period, the researchers measured the heart rate (beats per minute) of each subject, with the following summary results: Mean = 73.5, Standard Deviation = 6. n=90 (we can treat this as a large sample and use z) It is well known that the mean resting heart rate of adults is 71 beats per minute. Based on the research on laughter and heart rate, we would expect subjects to have a higher heart beat rate while laughing.Construct 95% Confidence interval using z value. Review the following rates. Determine what to call each one, then calculate it using the data provided in Table. 1. Unintentional-injury-specific mortality rate for the entire population. Calculate cause-specific mortality rate. 2. All-cause mortality rate for 25–34 years old. Calculate the age-specific mortality rate. 3. All-cause mortality among males. The steel is cut with a diamond saw and requires the resulting parts to be within 10.005 inch of the length specified by the automobile company. Data are collected from a sample of 50 steel parts and are shown in the following table. The measurement reported is the difference in inches between the actual length of the steel part, as measured by a laser measurement device, and the specified length of the steel part. For example, the first value, -0.003, represents a steel part that is 0.003 inch shorter than the specified length. Complete parts a through c Click the icon to view the data table. a. At wind speeds above 1000 centimeters per second (cm/sec), significant sand-moving events begin to occur. Wind speeds below 1000 cm/sec deposit sand and wind speeds above 1000 cm/sec move sand to new locations. The cyclic nature of wind and moving sand determines the shape and location of large dunes. At a test site, the prevailing direction of the wind did not change noticeably. However, the velocity did change. Sixty-two wind speed readings gave an average velocity of x = 1075 cm/sec. Based on long-term experience, o can be assurhed to be 250 cm/sec. (a) Find a 95% confidence interval for the population mean wind speed at this site. (Round your answers to the nearest whole number.) lower limit cm/sec upper limit cm/sec (b) Does the confidence interval indicate that the population mean wind speed is such that the sand is always moving at this site? Explain. O No. This interval Indicates that the population mean wind speed is such that the sand may not always be moving at this…arrow_forward
