Relative Risk and Odds Ratio In a clinical trial of 2103 subjects treated with Nasonex, 26 reported headaches. In a control group of 1671 subjects given a placebo, 22 reported headaches. Denoting the proportion of headaches in the treatment group by pt and denoting the proportion of headaches in the control (placebo) group by pc, the relative risk is pt/pc. The relative risk is a measure of the strength of the effect of the Nasonex treatment. Another such measure is the odds ratio, which is the ratio of the odds in favor of a headache for the treatment group to the odds in favor of a headache for the control (placebo) group, found by evaluating the following:
The relative risk and odds ratios are commonly used in medicine and epidemiological studies. Find the relative risk and odds ratio for the headache data. What do the results suggest about the risk of a headache from the Nasonex treatment?

- A group of health conscious researchers were interested in ways to lower blood pressure. The study consisted of 90 participants. 30 participants were randomly assigned to eat a heart healthy diet, 30 were randomly assigned to a heart healthy exercise routine, and 30 were randomly assigned to do nothing and serve as a control. After a month of their assigned intervention, participants' blood pressure was measured. Which statistical test should be used to compare the 3 intervention types on post-treatment blood pressure? df between= ? df within= ? df total= ?arrow_forwardA group of disabled women ages 65 and older were followed for several years. It was found that those who had a vitamin B12 deficiency were twice as likely to suffer from severe depressions than those who did not.a. Describe the type of study being performed.b. Describe a study that would utilize an independent t test as the test statistic.arrow_forward
- In an observational study it was found that people who had received the flu shot this year had better blood pressure readings, on average, than people who did not. Can it be claimed that the flu shot is the cause of the lower overall blood pressure? Why or why not?arrow_forwardThe following table represents the results of the study which compares effects of regular coffee vs decaffeinated coffee. The outcome is a development of headache. Regular coffee Headaches 17 Decaffeinated coffee 9 Total 26 No headaches 51 55 106 Which of the values best represents the risk difference(RD) in this study?arrow_forwardThe drug OxyContin (oxycodone) is used to treat pain, but it is dangerous because it is addictive and can be lethal. In clinical trials, 259 subjects were treated with OxyContin and 232 of them developed nausea (based on data from Purdue Pharma L.P.). Use a 10% significance level to test the claim that the proportion of OxyContin users that develop nausea is different from 90%. - When a t-test is used to compare pre- and post-treatment data. What does the t-test reveal about the difference between baseline and treatment?arrow_forwardInternet addiction has been described as excessive and uncontrolled Internet use. The authors of a research article used a score designed to measure the extent and severity of Internet addiction in a study of 837 male and 874 female sixth-grade students in China. Internet Addiction was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Diagnostic Test. The lowest possible score on this test is zero, and higher scores indicate higher levels of Internet addiction. For the sample of males, the mean Internet Addiction score was 1.51 and the standard deviation was 2.02. For the sample of females, the mean was 1.01 and the standard deviation was 1.67. For purposes of this exercise, you can assume that it is reasonable to regard these two samples as representative of the population of male Chinese sixth-grade students and the population of female Chinese sixth grade students, respectively. The standard deviation is greater than the mean for each of these samples. Explain why it is not reasonable to…arrow_forwardInternet addiction has been described as excessive and uncontrolled Internet use. - Internet addiction has been described as excessive and uncontrolled Internet use. The authors of a research article used a score designed to measure the extent and severity of Internet addiction in a study of 835 male and 873 female sixth-grade students in China. Internet Addiction was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Diagnostic Test. The lowest possible score on this test is zero, and higher scores indicate higher levels of Internet addiction. For the sample of males, the mean Internet Addiction score was 1.53 and the standard deviation was 2.02. For the sample of females, the mean was 1.07 and the standard deviation was 1.68. For purposes of this exercise, you can assume that it is reasonable to regard these two samples as representative of the population of male Chinese sixth-grade students and the population of female Chinese sixth grade students, respectively.
