Chapter 42.1, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction

To explain: Similarities between an open circulatory system and a fountain, related to flow property of hemolymph and water.

Concept introduction:

Circulatory system is also called as cardiovascular system or vascular system. It is an organ system that allows the blood to circulate and transport nutrients like amino acid, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, and blood cells to and fro from the cells in the body to provide nutrients and nourishment.

Parts of circulatory system:

  • Heart
  • Circulatory fluid
  • A set of interconnecting vessels

In this system, the blood flows through open spaces called sinuses and lacunae. Vessels are connecting links between sinuses and body cells. Exchange of materials will take place between blood and sinuses.

Blurred answer
Students have asked these similar questions
a) List at least five things that a circulatory system does to help the body cells. Which of these is most important? b) Name some animals with an “open circ system” ; know how it works with some vessels, heart/pumps and hemolympth blood-like fluid c) what are the general differences between veins, capillaries and arteries? What do we call very tiny arteries? Very tiny veins?
Describe the path a red blood cell takes in the human circulatory system using the following anatomical structures: right and left atrium, right and left ventricle, pulmonary and aortic semilunar valve, inferior and superior vena cava, pulmonary artery and aorta, right AV valve (tricuspid valve) and left AV valve (mitral or bicuspid valve), and pulmonary veins.
Why are the two separate circulatory systems said to be “serially connected”?
