Concept explainers
Which is a vector quantity, speed or velocity? Defend your answer.
To identify: Whether speed or velocity is vector quantity.
Answer to Problem 5A
Velocity is vector quantity.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Scalar quantity is the quantity that has magnitude only while vector quantity is the quantity that has magnitude as well as direction.
Speed defines how fast is the object moving. By expressing only magnitude speed of an object is measured. Velocity defines how fast an object is moving along with the direction. It means velocity has both magnitude as well as direction. So, velocity is a vector quantity while speed is a scalar quantity.
Conclusion:
Therefore, velocity is vector quantity.
