Interpretation:

The relative stabilities of 1,2-disubstituted cyclobutanes and 1,3-disubstituted cyclobutanes are to be judged.

Concept introduction:

The compounds that have the same molecular formula of atoms but the structure of the compounds are different for the positions of atoms are called isomers.

Alkenes are carbon compounds that have one or more double bonds present between two carbon compounds.

In double bond or cyclic compounds, if the same two functional groups are present on the same adjacent side of the double bond or cyclic compound, then the given compound is labelled as cis.

If the two functional groups are present on the different sides of the double bond or cyclic compound, the given compound can be labeled as Trans.

Cis-trans isomerism exists in the compounds in which similar groups are present on the adjacent carbon atoms.

The trans are more stable than cis due to the more steric hindrance of cis.

Bulkier group acquires equatorial positions to form stable conformer due to steric factors.
