Concept introduction:

A molecule’s index of hydrogen deficiency (IHD) or degree of unsaturation is defined as half the number of hydrogen atoms missing from that molecule compared to an analogous, completely saturated molecule. Each double bond contributes 1 to a molecules’s IHD. Each triple bond contributes 2 to a molecules IHD. Each ring contributes 1 to a molecules IHD.
