Concept explainers
You are participating in a summer internship with the Coast Guard. You have been assigned the duty of determining the direction in which a Coast Guard speedboat should travel to intercept unidentified vessels. One day, the radar operator detects an unidentified vessel at a distance of 20.0 km from the radar installation in the direction 15.0° east of north. The vessel is traveling at 26.0 km/h on a course at 40.0° east of north. The Coast Guard wishes to send a speedboat, which travels at 50.0 km/h, to travel in a straight line from the radar installation to intercept and investigate the vessel, and asks you for the heading for the speedboat to take. Express the direction as a compass bearing with respect to due north.

- You go on a hike with some friends. First, you travel 1.7 miles in a direction due west. Then, you spend some time checking Twitter and not paying attention to where you're walking. Once you look back up from your phone, you are at a ranger station that is 2.1 miles in a direction 27 degrees west of north from your starting point. How far, and in what direction, did you travel while checking Twitter?arrow_forwardA sailboat sets out from the U.S. side of Lake Erie for a point on the Canadian side, 97.0 km due north. The sailor, however, ends up 56.0 km due east of the starting point. (a) How far and (b) in what direction (west of due north) must the sailor now sail to reach the original destination?arrow_forwardAn explorer is caught in a whiteout (in which the snowfall is so thick that the ground cannot be distinguished from the sky) while returning to base camp. He was supposed to travel due north for 5. 1 km, but when the snow clears, he discovers that he actually traveled 8.0 km at 48° north of due east. (a) How far and (b) in what direction (south of due west) must he now travel to reach base camp?arrow_forward
- An airplane takes off from Masipag runway which has a bearing of N 28° E. After flying for 3 miles, the pilot turns 90° and heads toward the northwest. After the plane goes 4 miles in this direction, what bearing has the plane from the terminal?arrow_forwardAs it passes Grand Bahamas Islands, the eye of the hurricane Katrina is moving in a direction of 60 0 north of west at a speed of 50 kph. Three hours later, it shifts due north where its speed slows to 25 kph. How far from the Grand Bahamas is the eye of the hurricane 4.5 hrs. after it passes over the island?arrow_forwardA sailboat sets out from the U.S. side of Lake Erie for a point on the Canadian side, 90.0 km due north. The sailor, however, ends up 50.0 km due east of the starting point. (a) How far and (b) in what direction must the sailor now sail to reach the original destination?arrow_forward
- A Coast Guard cutter detects an unidentified ship at a distance of 22.0 km in the direction 15.0° east of north. The ship is traveling at 29.0 km/h on a course at 40.0° east of north. The Coast Guard wishes to send a speedboat to intercept and investigate the vessel. (a) If the speedboat travels at 58.0 km/h, in what direction should it head? Express the direction as a compass bearing with respect to due north. 9.2 X Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations.° east of north (b) Find the time required for the cutter to intercept the ship. 22.76 X Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. When the airport sends out a rescue crew, in which direction and how far should this crew fly to go directly to this plane? (With precise solution please) A. 351km with a direction of south B. 351km with a direction of 11.8 degrees south of west C. 351km with a direction of 11.8 degrees south of east D. 351km with a direction of eastarrow_forward

At first, she follows the straight, clearly marked trails. From the trailhead, she travels 2.00 miles down the first trail. Then, she turns 30.0° to the left to follow a second trail for 1.60 miles. Next, she turns 160.0° to her right to follow a third trail for 1.70 miles. At this point, Sofia is getting very tired and would like to get back as quickly as possible, but all of the available trails seem to lead her deeper into the woods. She would like to take a shortcut directly through the woods (ignoring the trails). What distance dsc does she have to walk to take a shortcut directly back to her starting point? Through what angle Osc should she turn to the right in order to take the shortcut directly back to her starting point? dsc= 0sc = milesarrow_forward
