Chapter 4, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The unique characteristic of Gram-positive bacteria.

Introduction:

A Danish physician Hans Christian Gram developed a technique of staining that determines two groups of bacteria that differ from each other. Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria differ due to the differences in the peptidoglycan layer of the cell envelope. Cell envelope is composed of two or three layers that are cell membrane, cell wall and the outer membrane (in some bacteria).

Summary Introduction

To determine:

The unique characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria.

Introduction:

Bacteria are the prokaryotes that do not possess organelles. Their cell wall has peptidoglycan and they reproduce by binary fission. All bacteria possess cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleoid, and ribosomes, but there are some specific structures that are possessed by some bacteria.

Summary Introduction

To determine:

The characteristics that are common in both.
