Answer to Problem 1Q

The experimental data which is not predicted by Thompson is light spectrum of hydrogen and he could not make the planetary model of Rutherford- Bohr work because according to his plum-pudding model there is no Coulomb force of attraction between any charges.

Explanation of Solution

In J.J Thompson’s Plum pudding model for the structure of atom, he proposed that electrons (negatively charge particles) are embedded in a uniform positively charged mass, similarly as raisins in a plum pudding and he also said that electric force on electrons is also zero and they do not move rapidly.

Electromagnetic radiations are caused when the electrons oscillate or vibrate when atom is heated. The frequency of emission lies in visible region. But in reality spectrum of hydrogen atom contains, infrared region, visible region and ultraviolet region. Thompson model could not predict spectrum of hydrogen.

Thompson could not make the planetary model of Rutherford- Bohr work because according to his plum-pudding model there is no Coulomb force of attraction between any charges.

Conclusion:

Thus, the experimental data which is not predicted by Thompson is light spectrum of hydrogen and he could not make the planetary model of Rutherford- Bohr work because according to his plum-pudding model there is no Coulomb force of attraction between any charges.
