Answer to Problem 16P

The speed for a ground-state electron in the hydrogen atom is 2.19×106m/s and radial acceleration is 9.07×1022m/s2 while for lithium atom speed is 6.57×106m/s and acceleration is 2.45×1024m/s2.

Explanation of Solution

If an electron rotates around the nucleus then the expression for speed is given below:

    v=e4πε0mr

Here, v is the speed of an electron, e is the charge on electron, r is the radius and m is the mass of electron.

Multiply by c in both numerator and denominator.

    v=ec4πε0mc2r        (I)

Value of mc2 in electron Volt is:

    mc2=9.1×1031×(3×108)21.6×1019eV=511875eV

Write the expression for radial acceleration.

    a=v2r        (II)

Here, a is the radial acceleration.

For hydrogen like lithion ion Li++.

Write the expression for maximum Coulomb force.

    F=Ze24πε0r2        (III)

Here, F is the Coulomb force, Z is the atomic number of the metal, r is the radius and e is the charge of electron.

Write the expression for centripetal force.

    F=mv2r        (IV)

Here, F is the centripetal force.

From equation (III) and (IV) solve and rearrange the equation for value of v2.

    v2=Ze24πε0rm        (V)

Write the expression for radius.

    r=4πε0h2Zme2=a0Z

Here, a0 is the Bohr’s radius.

Substitute a0Z for r in equation (V).

    v2=Z2e24πε0a0m        (VI)

Conclusion:

Substitute 511875eV for mc2, 9×109 for 14πε0 , 1.6×1019 for e  and 5.29×1011m for r in equation (I).

    v=(9×109×1.6×1019eV.m)c(511875eV)(5.29×1011m)=1.44eVnm(3×108)(511875eV)(0.0529nm)=2.19×106m/s

Substitute 2.19×106m/s for v and 5.29×1011m for r in equation (II).

    a=(2.19×106m/s)2(5.29×1011nm)=9.07×1022m/s2

For Lithium ion:

Substitute 511875eV/c2 for m, 3 for Z , 9×109 for 14πε0 , 1.6×1019 for e  and 5.29×1011m for a0 in equation (VI).

    v2=(3)2(1.6×1019eV)(9×109)(5.29×1011m)(511875eV/c2)v2=4.78×104c2v=2.19×102c=6.57×106m/s

Substitute 6.57×106m/s for v and 5.29×1011m for r in equation (II).

    a=(6.57×106m/s)2(5.29×1011nm)/3=2.45×1024m/s2

Thus, the speed for a ground-state electron in the hydrogen atom is 2.19×106m/s and radial acceleration is 9.07×1022m/s2 while for lithium atom speed is 6.57×106m/s and acceleration is 2.45×1024m/s2.
