Chapter 4, Problem 1LO
Summary Introduction
To identify: The four basic types of tissues and describe their functions.
Introduction: The term “tissue” is derived from the French word “tissu”, which means something that is “woven”. Tissues are the characteristic feature of both plants and animals. In humans, there are trillions of cells. The cells that perform similar functions and having similar properties are grouped together to form tissues. The study of tissues is known as histology.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
The four basic types of tissues and their functions are listed as follows:
- Epithelial tissues: They are the components of secretory glands. Epithelial tissues also line the internal passages and chambers as well as cover the exposed surfaces.
- Connective tissue: The connective tissues fill the internal spaces and help to provide structural support. They also help to store energy.
- Muscle tissue: Muscle tissues are present in skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles. These tissues are involved in contractions to produce suitable movements.
- Nervous tissue: Nervous tissue is the characteristic feature of the nervous system which conducts electrical impulses to carry information to and from the brain.
