Answer and explanation

One meaning of consciousness, in addition to sensory awareness, selective attention, personal unity, and the waking state, is direct inner “awareness”. Although we cannot measure it scientifically, we know what is around us whether our eyes are open or closed, as well as what we are thinking at any given time; this is the essence of direct inner awareness.
