Concept introduction: The mineral zinc activates the enzymes of protein metabolism. It is a part of carbonate dehydratase and carbon dioxide transfer. It is important for the immune functions. Most carbonic anhydrase contains zinc ion in their functional site, and they are therefore classified as metalloenzymes.
