Chapter 36.2, Problem 3R
Summary Introduction
To review:
Two experiments to test the hypothesis that bacterium corn stunt spiroplasma inhibits gibberellin synthesis in corn plants.
Introduction:
The bacterium corn stunt spiroplasma infects corn plants and causes a significant reduction in the growth of plant leading to dwarf plants. These plants appear similar to a genetically dwarf corn plant. It was hypothesized that the bacterium inhibits gibberellin synthesis in plants.

A researcher is interested to test the antibacterial activity of a Philippine Plant crude extracts against Beta-lactamase producing Klebsiella pneumonia isolated in a hospital setting. He will use the following concentrations of crude extract, 500mg/ml, 250mg/ml and 100mg/ml. Positive control: Tetracycline 10mg/ml and DMSO as the negative control. Given this research scenario kindly construct a research framework.

Ser.: Mater. Sci. Eng. 833 012014 STATE THE HYPOTHESIS (In if-then format): Plants, when extracted, can produce dyes and the extracts have been used for different purposes such as the textile or food industry [1]. One potential plant that can be used as a natural dye is dragon fruit (Hylocereus cacti) or by another name Pitaya. Wybraniec and coworkers reported that dragon fruit has a potential as a source to produce red pigment and it's called betalains [2]. Betalain is a water-soluble pigment that gives color to flowers and fruits. Betalain pigments are divided into two groups, namely betacyanin which produces purplish red and betaxanthin which produce yellow-orange colors [2, 3]. In the dragon fruit peel, it is also containing pigments which are usually only discarded as food waste and have not been used optimally. This is very unfortunate because the fruit of the dragon fruit itself has…arrow_forwardGive typed full explanation Consider the following equation: Nt = N0ert 1. One of your tasks is to make sure that there is enough cell culture medium containing antibiotics to grow bacteria. One day you realize that there is only 5 ml of 10% Antibiotic stock solution in the freezer. You decide to use it all to prepare the working culture medium with 0.01% antibiotic. In the lab there is plenty of growth medium without antibiotics. (Note: dilution in medium is like dilution in water). You remember the equation to make dilutions of stock solutions. You usually use this formula to calculate the required volume of a stock solution, but you realize it can apply here as well, even though the unknown is the final volume. So, you make that dilution. Given that each bacterial…arrow_forward
