Chapter 36, Problem 4CT
Summary Introduction
To explain: Why erythropoietin usage enhance the performance of athletes.
Concept introduction:
Erythropoietin is an important growth factor that induces red blood cell production in blood. It is commonly called as EPO, which is actually a hormone produced by kidney. When the number of circulating RBC decreases or if the oxygen transport does not function, then the nervous system detects the change and passes the signal to liver where erythropoietin production will be increased.

Patients with a history of heart failure often get this history from chronic hypertension. Chronic hypertension leads to a condition called hypertrophic heart disease, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This means that the heart muscle gets bigger, allowing less room for it to fill with blood. If these patients take beta blockers, such as metoprolol, it will benefit them because the heart will not overwork and grow in size. However, if a patient has pulmonary edema, how could the beta blocker make this patient worse?
One way of reducing risk of cardiovascular disease is to ensure you are getting lots of antioxidants in your diet. What antioxidants would you recommend and not recommend for someone at risk of cardiovascular disease that is also on medication that interferes with their blood’s clotting mechanism? Explain the reasons for your recommendations in one to two paragraphs. Also, list three medical conditions that can alter a person's vitamin requirements. Explain what vitamin/s would be affected and how they should alter their dietary from normal recommendations.
Which of the following statements is (are) true concerning the pathways for blood clotting?a. The intrinsic pathway takes less time than the extrinsic pathway.b. The intrinsic and extrinsic pathways require sodium.c. The intrinsic pathway is started by factors from damaged tissues.d. The intrinsic pathway requires the same clotting factors as the extrinsic pathway.e. The common pathway results in fibrin changing to fibrinogen
