Chapter 36, Problem 39QTP
To determine

A manufacturer is ring rolling ball-bearing races shown in fig 13.15a. The inner surface has a surface roughness specification of 0.10 ± 0.006μm. Measured values taken from rolled rings indicate a mean roughness of 0.112μm, with a standard deviation of 0.02μm. Fifty thousand rings per month are manufactured, and the cost of rejecting a defective ring is $10.00. It is known that by changing lubricants to a special emulsion, the mean roughness could be made essentially equal to the design specification. Determine the additional cost per month that can be justified for the lubricant.

Welds, machining tool marks, and stress reversals, such as those in rotating parts, can cause a progressive failure even on a lightly loaded part such as a shaft. There is no sign of ductility, only a smooth surface having striations like a clamshell. How would you identify this kind of failure? What is it called?
Q1: How do your results for μs and μk compare to literature values for dry metal on plastic? Cite what you compared to. Do they agree with the literature within error? If not, discuss any systematics that could have contributed to the discrepancy. Q2:  Is the force of static friction constant as the incline rises? Explain your answer. My Us value is 0.4452, and Uk value is 0.33
What precisely is stress testing, and why is it advantageous to begin with?
