Chapter 35.2, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To determine: How the determinate growth of leaves benefits the plant.

Concept introduction:

Plants have the unique ability to grow in an indeterminate manner that helps them to grow throughout the life. Plants have the meristematic tissues that allow this type of growth. There are two types of growth that occur in plants. One is primary growth that takes place in apical parts such as root and shoots. Another type of growth is secondary growth that occurs in older parts of the plant. Some plant organs show determinate type of growth, that is, they stop their growth after a period of time. Leaves and flowers exhibit this type of growth.

Can you recognize why these leaves are said to have “sunken stomata”?    Look for “hairs” on the leaf surface. Where are they located? How are they advantageous?    How does the appearance of each tissue layer in Nerium differ from Ligustrum?  Compare the upper epidermis to the lower epidermis.   Compare the amount of cuticle.
What might happen to a root if the pericycle disappeared?
