Chapter 34, Problem 36A
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The reason why kidney requires so much energy to function.

Introduction:

The excretory system includes organs that eliminate metabolic wastes and toxins from the body. In humans, this consists of the elimination of urea from the bloodstream and other wastes produced by the body. The elimination of urea occurs in the kidneys, while solid wastes are expelled from the large intestine. The excretory system in humans is composed especially of the kidneys and bladder. The kidneys purify urea and other waste products from theblood, which are then transferred to the urine in the bladder.

Explanation of Solution

The resting metabolic value for the kidney is high for the reason that kidney needs an abundance of mitochondria to offer sufficient energy to allow it to eliminate waste from the blood, reabsorb nutrients, adjust the balance of electrolytes, and fluid, keep acid-base homeostasis, and control blood pressure. Kidneys should use energy to reclaim all the substances that were pressure out of the blood via filtration. Since these materials are at a high concentration in the blood, energy should be used for the active transport of these substances to return into the blood.

Conclusion

Thus, the kidney required so much energy to function.
