To draw:
The model of the control circuit(s) required for driving an automobile at a fairly constant speed over a hilly road. Label each figure that represents a sensor, stimulus, or response.
Concept introduction:
An automobile is being driven by a driver at a fairly constant speed over a hilly road. There will be stimulus, sensor and a response. The stimulus is that a car is moving fast or slow. The sensor is that the electronic sensors detect the pace, and automatically the speed of the vehicle increases or decreases. The response is the increase in the speed by using an accelerator or the decrease of the speed by using a brake.

- In a hypothetical experiment, a monkey was trained over 500 trials to perform well in a centre-out reaching task. The trajectory of the trained animal’s hand from the start point in the centre to each of the eight peripheral targets was tracked and is plotted in Panel A of Figure 2 below. Once the animal was trained in this task, a uniform force field was then applied to the manipulandum arm that the monkey had to move to reach the targets. The animal was trained under this new force field regimen for a further 500 trials. During one of the last trials, the force field was unexpectedly not applied. The movements in this ‘unexpected’ condition are shown in Panel D. ‘Trial’ refers to a complete set of eight movements, one to each of the targets. • Use Panels B and C to illustrate: (i) the direction of the uniform force field that must have been used in the experiment; and (ii) the trajectories of the hand that you would expect on the first of the trials carried out under the force field…arrow_forwardidentificationarrow_forwardUse the following information to answer the next question: In a classic experiment, the strength of a neural stimulus and the resulting muscle contraction are compared. A single motor neuron that sends a message to a muscle fibre is suspended. One end is attached to the muscle fibre, and the free end of the muscle fibre is attached to a mass. If an electrical stimulus is sufficient to cause an impulse in the neuron, the muscle will contract and lift the mass. The following data were obtained from the experiment. Strength of Stimulus (mV) Mass Lifted by Muscle (g) 1 2 10 3 10 4 Analyze the data and answer the following questions: 1. a. Define threshold potential and illustrate your definition with a specific example. What is the minimum stimulus required to reach the threshold potential for this neuron? Answer: Explain the all-or-none response. Predict the mass that could be lifted at 4 mV of stimuli. Explain your answer. b. Answer: Choose a specific example of a sensory receptor, and…arrow_forward
