Concept explainers
Observing a launch An observer stands 300 ft from the launch site of a hot-air balloon. The balloon is launched vertically and maintains a constant upward velocity of 20 ft/s. What is the rate of change of the angle of elevation of the balloon when it is 400 ft from the ground? The angle of elevation is the angle θ between the observer’s line of sight to the balloon and the ground.

The diameter of the wheel is 165 feet. A brochure that gives some statistics associated with Colossus indicates that it rotates at 1.5 revolutions per minute and also indicates that a rider on the wheel is traveling at 10 miles per hour. Explain why these two numbers, 1.5 revolutions per minute and 10 miles per hour, cannot both be correct.arrow_forward
