Concept explainers
In our everyday environment, diffraction is much more evident for sound waves than for light waves. Why is this so?
To Explain: The reason that the diffraction is much more evident for sound waves than for light waves.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The bending of waves while encountering an obstacle and spreading out through a small opening is called diffraction.
Sound waves have longer wavelengths than the light waves. The diffraction is more pronounced for longer wavelengths than for the shorter wavelengths. So, longer wavelengths spread or diffract more in comparison to the shorter wavelengths. Hence, this is the reason that the diffraction is much more evident for sound waves.
Conclusion:
Hence, the longer the wavelength the more is the diffraction which is why it is more evident for sound waves.
