Alpha particle emission by hydrogen and deuterium
Answer to Problem 17Q
Solution:
Hydrogen and deuterium cannot emit an alpha particle
Explanation of Solution
The nucleus of an alpha particle contains two protons and two neutrons. The nucleus of a hydrogen atom contains one nucleon which is proton, whereas the deuterium has only one proton and electron. To emit a alpha particle nucleus should have minimum of 2 protons and 2 neutrons. Neither one has the necessary two protons and two neutrons. Hence neither hydrogen nor deuterium can emit an alpha particle.
