Chapter 3, Problem 5CT
Luke started a training program at the beginning of the summer. For the first week, he jogged 1 mile. Each week after that, he increased the distance he jogged by about 0.5 mile and increased his speed. At the end of 2 months, he was able to jog 4.5 miles each day at a faster pease than he had been able to jog at the beginning of the summer. During the −month period, the muscle cells in his heart and his legs increased in size. Identify a critical membrane-bound organelle that increased a number and made it possible for Luke to run the longer distance. Also, explain how these organelles increased in number, and describe the location of the gentic code for the proteins in the organelles.

A muscle biopsy is taken after 12 days of heavy strength
training. The muscle cells appear to have a greater cross-
sectional area than before the training. What is the best
conclusion?
After 12 days of heavy strength training, muscle cells show
hypertrophy.
Muscle cells undergo hyperplasia after 12 days of strength
training.
Strength training does not cause any increase in muscle cell
volume.
Hyperplasia does not occur in muscle cells with heavy strength
training.
Reports in the media about stem cells usually state that they “turn into any kind of cell in the body.” Explain why this statement is only partially correct, including a description of how a stem cell maintains the population of stem cells.
You are growing up myoblasts, C2C12 cells, to use in a myogenic study. You are using T-150 flasks with a culture area of 150 cm2 and when confluent contains 2 x 107 cells.
2) You seed a culture of squamous epithelial cells at 8 am on Monday with 1.2 x 105 cells. The next day at 8 am you harvest the cells. You know from past studies that the generation time is 26 hours for this cell line. How many cells do you predict you should have on hand?
A) 1.64 x 10^5 cells
B) 4.56 x 10^3 cells
C) 5.23 x 10^10 cells
D) 1.75 x 10^8 cells
E) None of these

- (AKS 1b1 / DOK 2) Patients with a genetic condition known as cystic fibrosis struggle with symptoms such as lung and digestive problems. The cells of patients with the disease do not transport water or other materials out of the cell efficiently. Therefore, patients' cells have a build up of water and other substances inside the cell. Which of the following BEST describes how cystic fibrosis impacts cells? O A. Cystic fibrosis affects the cell membrane increasing cellular transport and homeostasis B.
