Chapter 3, Problem 3.56P
A water hose is used to fill a large cylindrical storage tank of diameter D and height 2D. The hose shoots the water at 45° above the horizontal from the same level as the base of the tank and is a distance 6D away (Fig. P3.56). For what range of launch speeds (υ0) will the water enter the tank? Ignore air resistance, and express your answer in terms of D and g.

A radar station sends a signal to a ship which is located a distance 13.8 kilometers from the station at bearing 136° clockwise from the north. At the same moment, a helicopter is at a horizontal range of 19.6 kilometers, at bearing 146° clockwise from the north, with an elevation of 2.56 kilometers. Let east be the î direction, north be the ĵ direction, and up be the direction.
a) What If? The ship begins to sink at a rate of 5.50 m/s. Write the position vector (in km) of the ship relative to the helicopter as a function of time as the ship sinks. Assume that the helicopter remains hovering at its initial position and that the sinking rate remains the same even after the ship sinks under the surface.

- You are watching an archery tournament when you start wondering how fast an arrow is shot from the bow. Remembering your physics, you ask one of the archers to shoot an arrow parallel to the ground. Unfortunately the archer stands on an elevated platform of unknown height. However, you find the arrow stuck in the ground 58.0 m away, making a 3.00 angle with the ground Part A How fast was the arrow shot? Hint: In this question, you do not need to know the initial y-position of the arrow, nor should you assume a value. . The final direction of the arrow indicates the ratio of the v_y/v_x. So tan(final_angle with respect to the x-axis)= v_y/v_x but neither v_y, nor v_x are known. Since the arrow initially was fired horizontally, it only has an x component of velocity at first, and since there is no acceleration in x, v_x final= v_x initial. So you only need to find v_x final to get the initial velocity. You need another equation that relates v_y and v_x. Well, v_y -gt and you can get t…arrow_forwardA pilot needs to fy to a destination 350 km north of his current position in 2.0 hours. - An archerfish, peering from just below the water surface, sees a grasshopper standing on a treebranch that’s just above the water. The archerfish spits a drop of water at the grasshopper and knocks it into the water. The grasshopper’s initial position is 0.45 m above the water surfaceand 0.25 m horizontally away from the fish’s mouth. The launch angle of the drop is 63 degrees with respect to the water surface. A. Find an expression for how fast the drop is moving when it leaves the fish’s mouth. (Your expression should only contain symbols of physical quantities. No numbers are needed here.) B. Find the numerical value for how fast the drop is moving when it leaves the fish’s mouth. (Plug the values of physical quantities into your expression from part A (do not forget units!)) C. Evaluate your answer that you found in part B by using it to find the value of a physical quantity given in the problem statement.(This is called evaluating for consistency.)
