Chapter 3, Problem 1Q
To determine

Whether an object moving along a curved path necessarily accelerated.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 1Q

yes

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Velocity is a vector quantity which means that to measure velocity, both magnitude and direction need to be measured.

For an object moving along a curved path, the direction of velocity is always changing. So, the object accelerates. Even if the magnitude of velocity that is the speed remains the same, the acceleration is not zero because of the changing direction.

Conclusion:

So, an object moving along a curved path is necessarily accelerated.
