Introduction:
The limbic system is an area of the brain involved with memory and emotion. It includes the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, and cingulated gyrus. Hippocampus is present in the forebrain. It plays an essential role in the formation of declarative memories. Declarative memory is a form of long-term memory. It includes the collection of memories such as events, facts, figures, and locations. The amygdala plays an important role in the perception of emotions such as anger, fear, and sadness and also controls aggression. It is located in the temporal lobe of the brain. It is often overactive in people suffering from panic disorders.

- Researchers have discovered several neurological issues in the brains of patients with affective (mood) disorders. Which of the following neurological anomalies is found in bipolar patients during a manic episode, but NOT in patients experiencing depression? A) Reduced brain tissue in prefrontal areas and hippocampus. B) Increased metabolic activity in part of the prefrontal cortex. C) Enlargement of the amygdala and hypothalamus, leading to greater stress responses and higher cortisol levels. D) Reductions in overall brain activity, and especially in prefrontal regions and other circuits that regulate emotions.arrow_forwardWhich of the following statement regarding extinction of learned response is INCORRECT? a.) Extinction of fear/emotional response is often impaired in PTSD b.) The extinguished response is suppressed and can often recover without the need to relearn it c.) It may occur when conditioned stimulus is presented repeatedly without unconditioned stimulus d.) The extinguished response is forgotten and can be relearnedarrow_forwardSome survivors of disastrous events have post-traumaticstress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms include nightmaresabout the experience and suddenly feeling as if the eventis recurring. Brain-imaging studies of people with PTSDshowed that their hippocampus was shrunken and theiramygdala unusually active. Given these changes, whatother brain functions might be disrupted in PTSD?arrow_forward
- Long-term stress and sleep deprivation is associated with memory loss and negative thoughts.Subjects in a research study were shown images after they received either a full night’s rest or limited rest. The subjects were shown negative, positive, and neutral images. The subjects with limited rest remembered most of the negative images but only half of the positive and neutral images. The structures of the brain affected by long-term stress and sleep deprivation are, respectively: Select one: a. Long-Term Stress Sleep Deprivation Temporal lobe Frontal lobe b. Long-Term Stress Sleep Deprivation Temporal lobe Parietal lobe c. Long-Term Stress Sleep Deprivation Frontal lobe Occipital lobe d. Long-Term Stress Sleep Deprivation Frontal lobe Parietal lobearrow_forwardAccording to Squire, what brain areas receive the majority of amygdala outputs during an emotional event? a. The hippocampus subdivisions that controls reward-based responses b. The occipital cortex, the pituitary gland, and the hypothalamus c. Cortical areas that process behaviorally relevant sensory perceptions d. Subcortical areas that control autonomic and motor responses e. The motor cortex, the cerebellum, and the thalamusarrow_forwardA potential effect of chronic alcohol abuse is the development of cerebellar damage. - What region of the limbic lobe is responsible forgenerating stress responses via the hypothalamus?a. hippocampusb. amygdalac. mammillary bodiesd. prefrontal cortexarrow_forwardWhich of the following is True and which of the following is false: 1) Psychoactive drugs rarely provoke a response by the area postrema due to their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier easily. 2) George weighs 200 lbs and Marcy weighs 120 lbs. Both are sadly opioid addicts. If they both inject the same amount of heroin, they will likely have similar experiences because the amount of blood you have is not related to your weight. 3) Drugs that are addictive always produce tolerance and withdrawal. 4) Symptoms of withdrawal are usually the opposite of the effects of the previously used drug. 5) Although their main effects occur in other neurochemical systems, both MDMA (Ecstasy) and cannabis distort the activity of dopamine, suggesting that these drugs have the potential to be addictive. 6) Opioids produce most of their effects by enhancing the release of a variety of neurochemicals from presynaptic axon terminals. 6) Dr. Baskin is studying the heritability of aggressiveness in…arrow_forwardEpilepsy Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that disrupts neural activities and causes recurrent seizures. About 70% of people with epilepsy can be treated with medication to prevent seizures from occurring. If medication does not work, surgery is an option for some patients. One of the procedures involves cutting the brain so that the seizures cannot be spread to other parts of the brain. An individual was suffering from violent headaches and blurred vision for several years. A doctor determined that this individual had a tumour on the anterior pituitary. Explain why this person was experiencing blurred vision.arrow_forward
