Concept explainers
Type of bonding in N2, HCl, Fe atoms
Answer to Problem 1Q
Solution:
Covalent bond in N2
Covalent bond in HCl
Metallic bond in Fe atoms
Explanation of Solution
Covalent bond in N2 molecule - there are 5 electrons in outermost shell of Nitrogen atom, each nitrogen atom shares its three electron with three electrons of other nitrogen atom and complete its octet and acquire stability. Hence there is triple covalent bond is present in N2 molecule.
Covalent bond in HCl hydrogen has 1 electron in outermost shell and chlorine has 7 electrons in outermost shell to complete their outermost shell and acquire stability hydrogen share its one electron with seven electrons of chlorine atom and forms a single covalent bond
Metallic bond in Fe atoms iron is a metal and forms metallic bond in this type of bonding outermost shells of adjacent atom overlap and outer shell electrons are free to move through lattice.
