The mammary glands are involved in the ejection and synthesis of milk by the process of lactation. It can continue for years till the breast is stimulated mechanically or by infants. It can last only up to a week for women who do not breast feed. Traditionally, women nursed their own infants till 2.8 years, before the entry of infant formulas.
