Chapter 28.3, Problem 8AYLO
Summary Introduction
To discuss:
The schedule of oogenesis and folliculogenesis; why the ovarian cycle is thought to be average of 28 days long, whereas any given egg and follicle takes much longer to mature; and what event marks day 1 of a cycle.
Introduction:
The term “oogenesis” is obtained from the ovary, and this term is connected to fertilization. Oogenesis is the process involved in the development of egg. Folliculogenesis in biology is the activity in which the ovarian follicles develop. Oogenesis occurs in the ovaries every month and ends with menopause.

Internal genitalia like the vagina, uterus, and ovaries in females, and the testes, epididymis, and vas deferens in males, originate from the Mullerian and the Wolffian ducts respectively. These two ducts are both present in the same fetus during the early phase of human development, but one will prevail over the other to make the developing conceptus a female or a male. If both persist, the baby will have an intersex condition. Discuss two syndromes that are examples of disorder of sex development (intersex condition), and how they will affect the future life of the newborn

- Modeling the Menstrual Cycle: The menstrual cycle takes an average of 28 days to complete and repeat. There are 4 phases: Day 1-5 Menstruation (period) Day 6-14 proliferation Day 11-13 Ovulation Day 15-28 Secretory phase Task: Create and annotate a model to show what is happening in the female body during the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle. This can be done digitally or on paper. If you chose to do this on paper, just make sure it gets to Ms. B. Things to include: Arrange the phases into a cycle Include changes in hormone levels in each phase (PSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone) Changes in the uterine lining What is happening to the egg (follicular, ovulation, luteal phase) It might help to start with arranging the phases into a cycle and then fill in details about what is happening at each phase.
