Rare Earth metals form the lanthanoids. In the lanthanoids, the outer electronic configuration is mostly similar, as the f-orbital electrons are not as reactive as the d-orbital and s-orbital electrons. Thus, we see a group of trivalent elements that are reactive to oxygen and have many similar properties.
