Similarities and differences of a matter wave to a wave on string or matter wave
on an EM waves

Answer to Problem 1Q
Solution:
Similarities: Both the waves are transverse, can be polarized and periodical in time and space.
Differences: For string wave a medium is required, while for the EM waves no medium is required, EM wave cannot be exactly defined at a position while the movement of the wave on a string can be exactly defined.
Explanation of Solution
Similarities between wave on a sting and wave on EM waves:
- Both the waves are transverse wave
- Both the wave can be polarized
- Both the waves are periodical in time and space.
- Both waves follow the basic law of waves, that both waves can be reflected or refracted.
Differences between wave on a sting and wave on EM waves:
- String waves require a medium to propagate, while on the other hand EM waves do not require any medium to propagate.
- The exact position of EM wave cannot be determined as they travel in free space and move in the packet of quanta, while the position of wave on the string can be exactly determined.
Conclusion:
The difference between both EM wave and wave on a string has been illustrated.
