Some people think that our most environmental goals should be to sharply reduce the rate of population growth in the less-developed countries, where at least 92% of the world’s population is expected to take place between now and 2050. Others argue that the most serious environmental problems stem from high levels of resource consumption per person in more-developed countries, which have moreecological footprints per person. What is your view on this issue? Explain.
An ecologist studying plants in the desert performed the following experiment. She staked out two identical plots, which included a few sagebrush plants and numerous small, annual wildflowers. She found the same five wildflower species in roughly equal numbers on both plots. She then enclosed one of the plots with a fence to keep out kangaroo rats, the most common grain-eaters of the area. After two years, to her surprise, four of the wildflower species were no longer present in the fenced plot, but one species had increased dramatically. The control plot had not changed. Using the principles of ecology, propose a hypothesis to explain her results. What additional evidence would support your hypothesis?
Zebra mussel population growth in the Great Lakes is a growing concern. Zebra mussels are not native to North America, and due to their ability to rapidly multiply, they have been depleting the food sources for many of the native fish species in the Great Lakes. They are also associated with causing toxic algal blooms, preventing sunlight and oxygen access to many plant and fish life in the lakes.Three years ago, a 5 km3 section of the Great Lakes was studied and approximately 89 000 zebra mussel colonies were found. Each colony produced 120 colonies over a three-year period. However, only 2% of the new colonies survived past the first year. Over the three years, there were 97 000 dead colonies that were washed ashore in the Great Lakes. Many of the zebra mussels attach themselves to hard surfaces, such as boats and trailers. It was estimated that approximately 85 000 colonies attached themselves to boats and left the area. Many of these zebra mussels died, but some managed to hitchhike…

- Some people believe our most important goal should be to sharply reduce the rate of population growth in developing countries where 97% of the world’s population growth is expected to take place. Others argue that the most serious environmental problems stem from high levels of resource consumption per person in developed countries, which use 88% of the world’s resources and have much larger ecological footprints per person than do developing countries. What is your view on this issue? Explainarrow_forwardHawaiian forests grow on nutrient-poor, volcanic-derived soils that have Very low phosphorus levels. In an experiment, scientists fertilized some areas of Hawaiian forest with phosphorus. As a control, they left other areas unfertilized. After one year, they observed increased tree growth on fertilized sites. Fertilized trees supported 37% more herbivorous insect biomass than unfertilized trees. These findings provide evidence that: Hawaiian forest food chains exhibit bottom-up structure Hawaiian forest food chains exhibit both bottom-up and top-down structure Hawaiian forests are resilient but not necessarily resistant Hawaiian forests exhibit alternate stable states Hawaiian forest food chains exhibit top-down structurearrow_forwardSustainable development, ideally, improves living conditions For the present generation X As long as resources last For the entire current political administration For a few decades into the future For generations in the futurearrow_forward
- Part B-Interactions in the ecosystems Throughout this unit we have been examining how an organism Interacts with the living and non-living elements in an ecosystem. We Fve discussed and investigated predator/prey relationships as well as Tood chains and webs, Now it is time to put that knowledge into practice and explore some of the interactions between different components in your ecosystem apply it. Your Goal: Using the model ecosystem you have just created, you will generate one food chain/web. Method 1. Using your model, show 1 food web that contains at least 8 elements. You must include a producer, consumer and a secondary consumer. They must be realistic feeding relationships! (You may need to add an element to your ecosystem model). Remember, a food web contains many food chains; make sure your consumers have a variety of food to eat. a primary Önly for the elements in your food web - add to their labels whether it is a producer or consumer.
