Question
Chapter 27, Problem 27Q
To determine
Whether the given object is producing continuous spectrum or a line spectrum.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 27Q
Solution:
- (a) Produces continuous spectrum
(b) Produces bright emission line
(c) Produces continuous spectrum of light
(d) Creates a dark line of absorption spectrum
> (e) Produces continuous spectrum with absorption line.
Explanation of Solution
- A hot solid object: will produce continuous spectrum because hot dense objects will emit
electromagnetic radiation at all wavelengths or colors. This also called as the thermal spectrum. - An excited, rarefied gas: will produce bright line emission spectrum because atoms are very far part and therefore light cannot be a result of interaction between the atoms.
- A hot liquid: will produce continuous spectrum because hot liquid containing energy at all wavelengths. Any substance (
solid, liquid, gas )at a temperature above zero will produce thermal spectrum. - A light from a hot solid that passes through a cooler rarefied gas: creates a dark line or absorption line spectrum.
- A hot dense gas: will produce continuous spectrum with absorption line because dense gas at a temperature above absolute zero produce a continuous spectrum.
