Concept explainers
The De Broglie wavelength of a particle to be greater than (or)smaller than the dimensions of the particle.
Answer to Problem 21Q
Solution:
De Broglie wavelength of particle depends on momentum of it not on its dimensions.
Explanation of Solution
According to De-Broglie wavelength formula
Here, = wavelength
h = plank’s constant
p=momentum
=mv
Then,
= h/mv, both the cases are possible.
Case 1:
If a particle has a slow speed and a less mass, then the de-Broglie wavelength of a particle to be greater than the dimensions of the particle.
Case 2:
If a particle has a moderate speed and a large momentum then the de-Broglie wavelength of a particle to be smaller than the dimensions of the particle.
