The direction of the induced current in the ring is shown in Figure 1.

Explanation of Solution

According to the Lenz’s law, the induced current in the ring will produce a magnetic field, which will oppose the change in flux in the ring. Since the south pole of the bar magnet is pushed towards the conducting ring, the ring will produce a magnetic field, which opposes the change in flux due to the magnet. Thus by applying the right-hand rule gives the direction of current flow through the ring as shown in Figure 1.
