To explain:
The order from the health care provider is important for the use of the restraint to the patient. What are important components of the restraint order?
Case summary:
Ms. Cohen is hospitalized to repair her fractured hip due to the fall in her home. The patient needs IV (intravenous) antibiotics after surgery. Soon after the administration of the first dose, the patient became restless and she tried to remove her IV line. Also, she often tried to come out of the bed. Various alternatives for restraint were tried, however, due to her restlessness, she was pulling out the IV line and also getting out of the bed. Hence, the use of the restraint is necessary to Ms. Cohen.
Explanation of Solution
The use of restraint to the patient should be justified according to the clinical purpose. The physician’s or health care provider’s order is necessary for the use of restraint. The order should contain the current date, type and location of the restraint, duration of the use of restraint to the patient, and under which circumstances the restraint is used for the patient. These are the essential components must be present in the order. The main purpose to get the order for the use of restraint is to protect the patient from fall or other related physical injuries.
The date, duration, circumstances, type and location of the restraint are important components of the restraint order.
