Concept introduction: Stress is a biological response to a stressor such as environmental conditions, threat, challenge, or other psychological and physical barriers. Stressor may be physical or psychological or it can be a combination of both. The autonomic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis are the major systems that respond to stress. Situational stress occurs as sudden onset in response to stressor for a short period of time.
