Concept introduction:

α -bromination of carboxylic acid in presence of bromine and a catalytic amount of phosphorous tribromide to form α -bromocarboxylic acid is known as Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky reaction.  The formed α -bromocarboxylic acid when treated with ammonia gives α -aminocarboxylic acid as the product.

Aromatic electrophilic substitution happens when the aromatic ring is most activated.  The substitution of the incoming groups depends upon the nature of the groups that is already present in the aromatic ring.  If the group that is present in the aromatic ring is a ortho-para director then the substitution takes place in ortho and para position.  If it is a meta directing group then the substitution takes place in meta position.
