Question
Chapter 25, Problem 8PP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The intermediate formed during the conversion of adenine to hypoxanthine, hydrogen bonds of hypoxanthine-cytosine base pair and the consequences it would have through two rounds of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) replication is to be shown.
Concept Introduction:
▸ Normally, in DNA, adenine pairs with thymine by forming two hydrogen bonds. On treatment with nitrous acid, amino group of adenine undergoes changes to form diazonium and finally gets removed.
▸ Hypoxanthine forms two hydrogen bonds with cytosine instead of thymine. This mispairing then passes on to the daughter DNA formed during replication and further brings about permanent changes (mutations).
