Deathly Lamprey Repellent Predation by sea lampreys on native fishes in the Great Lakes is an ongoing problem. To help solve it, Michael Wagner and his team test methods of repelling lampreys. They carried out an experiment to investigate reports that sea lampreys detect the scent of lamprey carcasses and tend to avoid them. The researchers made alcohol-based lamprey carcass extracts, then observed what happened when lampreys were put in tanks and exposed to either this extract or to alcohol alone. FIGURE 25.6 shows their results.
FIGURE 25.6 Effectiveness of carcass extracts as a lamprey repellent.
Mean proportion of lampreys on the scented side of the test tank during B trials with 10 lampreys. Lampreys were placed in the tank for 20 minutes before exposure to alcohol or carcass extract and remained there for 40 minutes after exposure. The upper graph shows results with alcohol as the stimulus; the lower shows the results with carcass extracts. Bars indicate standard error.
What was the lowest proportion on lampreys on the scented side of the tank when the scent was alcohol? When the scent was alcohol-based carcass extract?

- For your summer research project, you decide to repeat Lillian Tuttle’s (2017) experiment testing the effect of lionfish on other fish that are cleaners and clients. You do this new experiment at a new location (Bonaire), but use basically the same experimental approach and BACI design as Tuttle. a) You do not separate resident and transient clients (as Tuttle did), and below is a graph of your results showing the effect of the treatment on the total density of client fish in the community. Please explain your result. Imagine that you are planning to publish your experiment and that your answer to this question will be part of the “Results” section of your paper. Please do not worry about hypothetical statistical tests; just assume that the obvious patterns displayed in the graph can be interpreted at face value.arrow_forwardUsing the video from https://www.pbs.org/video/natures-cutest-symbiosis-the-bobtail-squid-4bhtmo/ The bobtail squid and Vibrio fischeri serve as model organisms for studying cellular communication. These results provide further evidence for the effects of habitat size on the phorid-Acromyrmex system in a tropical rain forest, based on the abundance of parasitoids both as adults in the field and as reared immature phorids in the laboratory. Phorid parasitized leafcutter ants were most abundant in areas of continuous forest, and less abundant in the forest fragments. O Phorid flies are important parasitoids of leafcutter ants nd leafcutter ants can be found in Brazil's Southeastern Both phorid flies Atlantic Forest. The study provides evidence that this parasitoid-host interaction between phorid flies and leafcutter ant differs between continuous forest and forest fragments. Phorid flies were just as abundant in forest fragments as they were in continuous forest, but were less successful in parasitizing leafcutter ants.arrow_forward

- 6. a) What is meant by the term "symbiosis"? [K/U] b) Give an example for each type of symbiosis and explain how each partner is affected by the relationship. [C]arrow_forwardMany fish purchased and consumed by humans are bred and raised in fish farms. The fish on a farm can be infected by parasites called sea lice, which are small crustaceans that feed on a fish's blood and skin, which may injure or even kill the fish. Jansen and colleagues (2012) analyzed sea lice infections on trout and salmon farms. Fish farms provided data on the numbers of sea lice found on their captive fish. The scientists compared the number of sea lice with the "local farmed fish biomass density," which is a measure of population density that accounts for both the number and biomass (or size) of fish on a farm. Other research has also found a relationship between sea lice infestation and mortality. From this figure and information, how does density of fish on a farm affect the number of sea lice per fish? What type of factor is regulating the size of farmed fish populations and population growth? 100 200 300 400 Local farmed fish biomass density (metric tons) 3. 2. We also showed in class that the mosquito immune system can be upregulated to limit or terminate Plasmodium infection of these mosquitoes. So why don’t we see natural selection to upregulate the mosquito’s immune system and get rid of that parasite? Best explanation. Upregulating the immune system comes at the cost of shortening life span and thus (most probably) reproductive success Having a Plasmodium infection is negative for the mosquito, but it protects against much worse pathogens Upregulation of the immune system in Plasmodium leads to more rapid development of Plasmodium, causing even greater problems for Anopheles Statement is wrong. This upregulation was done with genetic engineering in a lab. Alleles to do something like that do not exist in naturearrow_forward
