A Nonideal Ammeter. Unlike the idealized ammeter described in Section 25.4, any real ammeter has a nonzero resistance. (a) An ammeter with resistance RA is connected in series with a resistor R and a battery of emf ε and internal resistance r. The current measured by the ammeter is IA. Find the current through the circuit if the ammeter is removed so that the battery and the resistor form a complete circuit. Express your answer in terms of IA, r, RA. and R. The more “ideal" the ammeter, the smaller the difference between this current and the current IA. (b) If R = 3.80 ft, ε = 7.50 V, and r = 0.45 Ω, find the maximum value of the ammeter resistance RA so that IA is within 1.0% of the current in the circuit when the ammeter is absent. (c) Explain why your answer in part (b) represents a maximum value.

- Power P0 = I0 V0 is delivered to a resistor of resistance R0. If the resistance is doubled (Rnew = 2R0) while the voltage is adjusted such that the current is constant, what are the ratios (a) Pnew/P0 and (b) Vnew/V0? If, instead, the resistance is held constant while Pnew = 2P0, what are the ratios (c) Vnew/V0, and (d) Inew/I0?arrow_forwardA 10.00-meter long wire cable that is made of copper has a resistance of 0.051 ohms, (a) What is the weight if the wire was made of copper? (b) What is the weight of a 10.00-meter-long wire of the same gauge made of aluminum? (c)What is the resistance of the aluminum wire? The density of copper is 8960 kg/m3 and the density of aluminum is 2760 kg/m3.arrow_forwardResistors are commonly rated at 18W,14W,12W ,1 W and 2 W for use in electrical circuits. If a current of1 = 2.00 A is accidentally passed through a R=1.00 resistor rated at 1 W, what would be the most probable outcome? Is there anything that can be done to prevent such an accident?arrow_forward
- Two identical resistors of R0 = 71 Ω are connected head-to-tail. (a) Express the resistance R0 of one of the resistors in terms of the resistivity ρ, length L, and the cross section area A. (b) Calculate the total resistance R of the two resistors in ohms.arrow_forwardThe circuit in the diagram consists of a battery with EMF E, a resistor with resistance R, an ammeter, and a voltmeter. The voltmeter and the ammeter (labeled V and A, respectively) can be considered ideal; that is, their resistances are infinity and zero, respectively. The current in the resistor is III, and the voltage across it is V. The internal resistance of the battery rintrintr_int is not zero. Part A: What is the ammeter reading I? Express your answer in terms of E, R, and rint. Part B: What is the voltmeter reading V? Express your answer in terms of E, R, and rint. Part C: What is the power PR dissipated in the resistor? Express your answer in terms of I and V. Part D: Again, what is the power PR dissipated in the resistor? This time, express your answer in terms of one or more of the following variables: I, rint, and R. Part E: For the third time, what is the power PR dissipated in the resistor? Express your answer in terms of one or more of the following variables: E, rint,…arrow_forwardThe two figure panels show two ways to connect a real (non-ideal) voltmeter and a real ammeter in a circuit to calculate the resistance R. The internal resistance of the voltmeter is Rv and the internal resistance of the ammeter is Ra. The current flows from left to right in both panels, and the potential difference Vac between points a and c in both panels is the same. In panel (a) the voltmeter reads Vac = 12.1 V and the ammeter reads I1 = 0.098 A. In panel (b) the voltmeter reads Vab = 12.0 V and the ammeter reads I2 = 0.100 A. I need help with Part E.arrow_forward
- An electric device draws 7.10 A at 240 V. If the voltage drops by 10 % , what will be the current, assuming nothing else changes? Next, if the resistance of the device were reduced by 10 %, what current would be drawn at 240 V? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.arrow_forwardA capacitor of capacitance C = 1 µF is connected in series to a resistor of resistance R = 10 MN and a battery of emf = 3V. The capacitor is initially discharged. How many %3D seconds will it take for the current in the circuit to decrease to 42% of its initial value? Write the answer, rounded off to 2 decimal places, without units.arrow_forwardA cylindrical conductor has resistance of R0 = 140 Ω. It has length L, radius of the cross section r, and resistivity ρ. Part (a) Express the resistance in terms of L, r, ρ. Part (b) If the resistivity increases by a factor of 5, what would the value of the new resistance be, in ohms? Part (c) If the resistivity was restored to its original value and instead the length of the conductor decreased by a factor of 5, what would the value of the new resistance be, in ohms? Part (d) If the resistivity and length of the conductor were at their original values and the radius of the conductor increased by a factor of 4, what would be the value of the new resistance, in ohms?arrow_forward
- A battery has an emf of ε = 7 V, an internal resistance r = 18 Ω, and is connected to a resistor of R = 65 Ω. Express the current I through the circuit in terms of ε, r and R.arrow_forwardA battery with emf E and internal resistance r is first connectedto a resistor of resistance R1 = R, where R is greater than r.This resistor is then disconnected from the battery and replaced with aresistorof resistance R2 = 2R. Find the ratio of the current with the second resistor to the current with the first resistorarrow_forwardConsider a circuit consisting of a battery (4.26 Volts) and three resistors in parallel. If the resistances of the resistors are 16.3 Ohms, 17.7 Ohms, and 33.3 Ohms, calculate the current drawn from the battery. Give you answer in milliamperes to at least 3 significant figures.arrow_forward
