Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The α-D-glucose and β-D-glucose are enantiomers or not has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

The stereoisomers which are mirror images and are non-superimposable are known as enantiomers.

The α and β forms are determined by the anomeric carbon in Haworth projections.  In α-D-glucose, the –OH group on the anomeric carbon is located at the opposite of the terminal –CH2OH group.  In β-form, the –OH group is located at the same side as the terminal –CH2OH group.
