The kidney is a compound tubular gland of the urinary system which contains about 1.2 million functional excretory units called nephrons. A nephron consists of two principal parts: a renal corpuscle and a long renal tubule. The renal tubule is a duct that leads away from the glomerular capsule and ends at the tip of a medullary pyramid. It is divided into four major regions: the proximalconvoluted tubule, nephron loop, distal convoluted tubule, and collectingduct.
