Genes are the basic and smallest unit of hereditary made up of the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which stores genetic information and passes it on from parent to progeny. The term gene was first coined in 1909 by Wilhelm Johannsen. The expression of gene is a process through which the genetic information stored in a gene is used for the making of gene products, which are generally proteins.
