The location of kidneys in the abdomen with respect to the peritoneum.

Introduction:

Kidneys are a part of the renal system and are associated with the filtration of blood and production of urine in the human body. Each human possesses a pair of kidneys. These organs also maintain the fluid balance of the human body. Excretion of excess ions and other dissolved materials in the blood is also carried out by the kidneys.

Explanation of Solution

The internal organs of the human body that are under involuntary control are termed as visceral organs. Major visceral organs can be found in the abdominal cavity. The abdominal cavity is also lined by a layer of peritoneum but all the other organs present in the abdominal cavity are not lined by it.

Location of apair of bean-shaped organs called kidneys is retroperitoneal. It means that the kidneys are located on the upper lateral region of the posterior wall of the abdomen. The kidneys are located behind the parietal peritoneum layer in the abdomen. Thus, even though the kidneys are located in the abdomen, these bean-shaped organs are not surrounded by the peritoneum.
