Electrolysis is a purification technique. It is only possible for electropositive elements.

Electropositive elements undergo electrolytic reduction.

The reduction takes place on the halide of the metal or anhydrous molten oxide. Some electropositive elements are not suitable for electrolytic reduction because of their solubility.
