Interpretation:
The process of zone refining is to be described.
Concept introduction:
The naturally occurring chemical substances in the form of which metals occur in earth, along with impurities, are called minerals.
A mineral from which a metal is economically and conveniently extracted is called an ore. An ore contains many impurities that are removed by purification.
Minerals are the halides, oxides, carbonates, silicates, sulphides, and sulfates of metals.
The impurities of metals are removed by purification processes.
The process of purifying crude metals is called refining.
The purification depends upon the nature of the metal and the nature of the impurities to be removed.
Zone refining is a method to obtain metal with high purity.
Zone refining is based upon the principle that impurities are more soluble in the molten state than in the solid state.

- Describe the production of metallic aluminum by electrolytic reduction.arrow_forwardA 1.1324 g sample of magnetite ore was dissolved in concentrated HCl to give a solution that contained a mixture of Fe2+ and Fe3+. Nitric acid was added and the solution was boiled for a few minutes, which converted all of the iron to Fe3+. The Fe3+ was then precipitated as Fe2O3*xH2O by addition of NH3. After filtration and washing, the residue was ignited at a high temp to give 0.5394 g of pure Fe2O3. What is the percent Fe and the percent Fe3O4 in the sample?arrow_forwardA solution of Hg(NO3)2 is mixed with a solution of KBr. Both of these solutions are colorless. A white precipitate forms. Write the balanced equation representing the chemical reaction that took place.arrow_forward
- what are the most common minerals found in soils are combinations of which four elements, which are also the most common elements.arrow_forwardA metallurgical laboratory carried out analysis of a sample in which analysis of Mn was done by forming a precipitate of MnSO4. If 3.18 g of ore sample gives 0.28 g of MnSO4. Calculate the percentage of Mn present in the sample.arrow_forwardExplain Ostwald process of manufacturing nitric acid(HNO3)arrow_forward
- 6. Cite application of the acid sulfate solution in plating the different metals commonly used in industry.arrow_forwardWhat tests would you use to identify a solution of FeCl3?arrow_forwardIn acidic solution, sodium oxalate, Na₂C₂O4, is oxidized to CO₂ by MnO4. In the process, MnO, is reduced to Mn² +. To titrate a 0.855 g sample of Na₂C₂O₁, 43.7 mL of an MnO solution were required. The same MnO solution is then used to analyze samples that contain uranium. A 12.8 g sample of a material that contains uranium required 29.3 mL of the MnO, solution for titration. During titration, the uranium sample was oxidized as shown. UO² (aq) → UO *(aq) Calculate the mass percent of uranium in the sample. mass percent of uranium: %arrow_forward
