Chapter 2.2, Problem 9ATS
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The bond line for the constitutional isomer has to be given.

Concept Introduction:

A Bond-line structure is one of the direct methods of writing the structural formula for organic compounds.

Rules to draw Bond-line structure:

  1. 1) Zigzag format should be followed for the Carbon atoms in straight line.
  2. 2) Double bonds should be drawn as far away from each other as possible.
  3. 3) The direction in which the single bonds are drawn is irrelevant.
  4. 4) Heteroatoms and Hydrogen attached to the heteroatom should be drawn.
  5. 5) A Carbon atom must not be drawn with more than four bonds, since Carbon has only four orbitals in its outer most shell and hence, Carbon atoms can form only four bonds.

Constitutional isomers:

The chemical compounds have a similar molecular formula but different chemical structures are called constitutional isomers.
