Chapter 22, Problem 8CT
Summary Introduction

To answer:

As you have probably noticed, colds occur more frequently in the fall and winter. One explanation is that more people are crowded together in buildings when school starts and the weather cools. Design an experiment or epidemiological survey to test the hypothesis that crowded conditions explain the prevalence of colds in the fall and winter.

Introduction:

The common cold occurs in humans and most of the individuals are infected with the common cold at least two times per year. The rhinoviruses are the most common infection in the upper respiratory system. The common cold infects mostly in the nose, but it also causes infection in sinuses, larynx, and throat. The common symptoms include a sore throat, sneezing, running nose, headache, coughing, and fever.

You were recently hired as an epidemiologist at a county office. List and explain three measures that you would use to calculate a specific disease situation. In your view, why is it difficult to get accurate information about disease status in a population?
Sagar
Pathogen A has an ID50 of 10 cells and an LD50 of 10,000,000 cells. Pathogen B has an ID50 of 10,000 cells and an LD50 of 20,000 cells. From this information, we can determine that:  ○ Pathogen A has higher infectivity but lower virulence than Pathogen B. ○ Pathogen A has lower infectivity but higher virulence than Pathogen B.  ○ Pathogen B has higher infectivity but lower virulence than Pathogen A. ○ Pathogen B has higher infectivity and higher virulence than Pathogen A.
