Question
Chapter 22, Problem 2DAA
Summary Introduction
To determine: How close the male and female patches should be to form sporophytes in the absence of insects.
Concept introduction:
Mosses are flowerless, non-vascular seedless plants that reproduce using spores and have gametophyte-dominant life cycle. The spores are dispersed through water for fertilization. The sperms swim through water to reach the egg. Sometimes in search of food, small insects inadvertently transport the sperm from one plant to the egg of another plant.

Kalanchoe is the direct production of plantlets on the tips or edges of the leaves. Leaves that act as reproductive agents are almost always thick enough to store water. Is this reproduction sexual or asexual?
A plant biologist discovers a new species of plant in the ashes of a recent forest fire along the sides of a steep mountain range. It is fall, and temperatures are dropping below freezing. The biologist cannot stay in the field to observe the plant. What can he infer about the plants reproductive strategy based on his recent observations?
A) the plant will produce flowers because at this altitude there is sufficient sunlight
B) the plant will produce comes because cones will mature into adult plants more rapidly
C) the plant will produce cones because cones allow for seed dispersal through all seasons
D) the plant will produce flowers because flowers can protect the seed from extreme conditions
The drooping, bell-like flower Aquilegia canadensis is adapted for cross-pollination. However, if the plant has not been pollinated previously, self-pollination can occur. However, if cross pollination occurs after self-pollination takes place, the pollen from cross pollination reaches the style before the pollen from self-pollination. Using course concepts and vocabulary 1) Provide a reasoning for this phenomenon. 2) Would this adaptation for reproduction be beneficial for the plant?

- During double fertilization, one sperm will unite with the egg, forming a zygote. As mentioned in the lecture, a generative cell divides to form two sperm. How is the second sperm used during the process of double fertilization? 00 00 It fertilizes the flower by landing directly on the stigma, which is the sticky surface found above a flower's style and ovary. This depends on the type of plant. Land plants will allocate the sperm that is not united with the egg to the formation of different tissues through mitosis and cytokinesis. It forms a triploid cell by fusing with polar nuclei. This cell then divides and develops endosperm tissue. Since it was not the sperm to fuse with the polar nuclei, the sperm cell will degenerate.arrow_forwardSeeds and pollen grains are key adaptations for life on land.
